IAA is the most common plant hormone of the auxin class and it regulates various aspects of plant growth and development.

Auxins were the first plant hormones discovered. In 1880, Charles Darwin and his son Francis Darwin reported that some plant growth responses are regulated by “a matter which transmits its effects from one part of the plant to another.” In the 1930s, the term “auxin” was coined by biochemists. This term is derived from the Greek word “auxein,” which means “to increase” or “to grow.” Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is the most common plant hormone of the auxin class and it regulates various aspects of plant growth and development. Thus, the terms “auxin” and “IAA” are occasionally used interchangeably.
